About Pilates

Strength in Body & Mind

Pilates is a holistic exercise system with a mind-body approach designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Pilates works towards developing optimum range of motion with freedom of movement supported by inner control, strength, and clarity of skeletal alignment.

Whatever your age Pilates can provide health, fitness, and well-being benefits. The adaptability of Pilates allows for a group or individualised approach with variations and modifications providing options for all levels of fitness.

The Pilates method includes a broad, varied repertoire on the mat and equipment. As a trained Pilates matwork teacher, classes with me will be on the mat.

Pilates aims to develop functional movement patterns to support your lifestyle.

Designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.” Joseph Pilates

The system was conceived by Joseph Pilates to improve physical fitness and as a method of rehabilitation for hospital patients during the First World War. Joseph Pilates believed mental and physical health were closely connected. After emigrating to the United States Joseph and his wife Clara developed what he called ‘Contrology’ which is the original series of exercises that has continued to evolve and after his death became known as Pilates.

By approaching the exercises through the Pilates Principles, it allows us to embody Joseph Pilates' principles of breath, whole-body health and whole-body commitment. The six Pilates Principles are traditionally considered to be:

Breathing
Concentration
Control
Precision
Centering
Flow

You will notice these being referenced frequently in Pilates classes.
